A watermark marks a document as yours, as a draft, or as confidential — before it leaves your hands. Toolzio's Watermark PDF tool adds a custom text watermark with size, color, opacity, and position controls, free and without an account, entirely in your browser. Your file is never uploaded to a server, which is exactly what you want for the documents that most need watermarking: drafts, quotes, contracts, and unpublished work.
Choose the words, then tune how they appear. A large, dark watermark across the centre is hard to miss and hard to crop out, which suits confidential drafts; a small, pale watermark in a corner stays readable and unobtrusive, which suits a finished document that simply needs an owner's mark. Opacity is the control that matters most: too faint and the mark is pointless, too strong and it fights the content underneath. Set it, preview it, and adjust it before you commit — the right setting is the one you can see without having to look for it, on the lightest and the darkest pages alike.
A text watermark is a visible claim, not a security lock: it discourages casual reuse and makes the document's status obvious, but a determined person with editing software can remove a watermark. If a document must not be altered at all, a watermark alone is not enough. Watermarking cannot unlock an encrypted PDF, so unlock a protected file first. After applying it, open the result and check a few pages — especially the densest ones — to confirm the mark sits where you intended and does not bury anything important.
The words themselves are worth choosing carefully. A company name marks ownership, a word like CONFIDENTIAL or DRAFT marks status, and adding a date to a draft watermark stops an old version being mistaken for the current one later. Use the same wording across a set of related documents so the whole set reads consistently — a quote, an invoice, and a proposal that all carry the same mark look like they came from the same place. And apply the watermark to the copy you send, not to your only master copy: once a watermark is part of a file, removing it cleanly takes editing software, so keep an unmarked original for yourself.
Very large files are limited by your device memory. Encrypted PDFs must be unlocked first. This is a focused single-purpose tool, not a full desktop PDF suite.
